Remembering the 2003 Feast of St. Nicolae

December 2003,
Feast of St. Nicolae

To-day an American (of Irish descent), an Indian, some Dutch and an Irishman all gathered in my room in Budimex (Marie Curie) Hospital. This group had formed to travel around Romania and see how the various charity organizations worked. Somehow the variety of the members made the world seem a small place! We were many and varied yet all had the same aim – to bring the sunshine of love into places so needing this.

This year, as in all years, the feast of St. Nicolae was very special in our Oncology Ward. Once again doctors and nurses co-operated in keeping the St. Nicolae tradition fresh! During the night the lovely red stocking, filled with gifts, was quietly placed on each child’s pillow! The joy on awaking to find this can be imagined! All day little hands were busy opening gifts, doing puzzles or colouring the attractive cards or books. Of course there was the variety of foods for the feast and all to suit the children! One little boy so loved the ‘cozonac’ he couldn’t wait to have it cut!

For one day little children forgot their pain and confinement to bed – thanks to St. Nicolae tradition and all who keep that tradition bright!
